Texans vs. Browns score: Live updates Deshaun Watson makes first start for Cleveland after suspension
Watson returned from the sky and played stupid in his first start since Week 17 of the 2020 season.
Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson looked rusty in his first NFL start in 700 days after playing 30 minutes against his former team, the Houston Texans. He had a solid first half, overthrew several receivers and made smart end-zone cuts to finish with a stat line of 96 passing yards, 8-for-14 and one interception. However, the Browns took a 7-5 lead into the locker room.
The only touchdown in the first half was not on either team's offense, but on special teams. Brown wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones gave the ball to the Texans 24 and broke it three or four times before returning a 76-yard punt. People-Jones showed plenty of poise to stay upright early in the match. Watson's turnover marked the first time he had a proper play since Week 17 of the 2020 season. Watson threw a pass to Amari Cooper in the middle of the end zone, but Houston Texans linebacker Jalen Pitre ducked and was easily in front of the pass for an interception.
The Browns and Texans combined for three touchdowns in the first half, including one each on the game's first 12 plays. In Houston's opening drive, Tech linebacker Kyle Allen threw a deep interception on Browns safety John Johnson III and after running a few yards after a 14-yard completion from Watson, Browns wide receiver Anthony Schwarz fell. Nick Chubb was secured by the Cleveland Texans after being stuffed after a Houston sack.
